County Wexford in the Rare Old Times, 1880 – 1980 ,by Nicholas Furlong is a unique collection of old photographs many in pristine condition, some tattered, some works of high art, but all containing hundreds of faces and places from the 1880s to the 1980s.
The book spans a time of major cultural, social, moral and economic change in Ireland. It shows how far County Wexford people have come from the austere, turbulent era of the 1880s, through the 1916 Rising, two World Wars, and the economic depressions.
It covers the 1930s rise of the Blueshirts and the violent clashes with their old republican opponents and the newly elected Fianna Fail government. The foundation years of the Wexford Festival Opera, the glories and emigration heart breaks of the fifties blend with the bright new hope of the 1960s. It covers the visit to Wexford of the county’s own great grandson, John Fitzgerald, Kennedy, president of the United States of America, as well as the sporting triumphs and reverses, entry to the European Economic Community, the recessions, poverty and plenty. The work reaches the 1980s up to the dark clouds on the Churches horizon.
The author uses his distinctive style to put the pictures and images in a historical, social and moral context, making the book visually meaningful, while telling the fascinating story of County Wexford with its human population mix of Celts, Normans, English, German, French and more. All of County Wexford’s triumphs and human frailties are represented here.
